Update: 1/22/2025 Aetherdrift just previewed verge lands for all the painlands we will be losing so all painlands will be replaced with verges. This means the following combinations will have verges and fast lands when rotation happens: Black/White, Red/Blue, White/Red, Green/Black, Blue/Green watchout for these combinations!
Rotation is set for June 1st, 2025. With this change, we’ll be losing Dominaria United, The Brothers’ War, Phyrexia: All Will Be One, March of the Machines, and March of the Machines: The Aftermath. While it might feel tempting to celebrate the departure of Sheoldred, The Apocalypse and Atraxa, the Grand Unifier, my bigger concern is the duel lands we’re about to lose. The land options in the recent sets have been lackluster unless you’re a fan of Scry lands.
Let’s review the lands that will rotate (you can always get a full list of rare/mythic lands that will rotate here)
Losing two lands. Each of these are losing at a pain land and a fast land.
Black / Red
Red / Green
White / Blue
Blue / Black
Green / White
Notice that all these combinations had a verge land printed in Duskmourn to replace the loss of two dual lands. Short version verge lands are a pickup right now because their price is only going to go up after rotation.
Losing a single land. In these combinations we lose the pain lands.
Green / Blue
Blue / Red
White / Black
Black / Green
Red / White
Due to the verge lands essentially all color combinations will be equal come rotation and some might be better depending on lands we get in the sets before rotation.
Other Lands.
Without the legends deck Plaza has seen almost zero play. Mishra’s Foundry and Mirrex has been helpful in decks without Ixlan attack lands but is mostly replaced by
Foundainport or
Soulstone Sanctuary now.
Short version: Verge lands are a buy right now because their price is going to go up. Every deck is losing pain lands and three color combinations are going to be rough still… unless they print tri-lands in a future set.
